Missouri Public Records

Missouri Public RecordsMissouri offers many records to the public, although certain types are restricted. For instance, Missouri birth records, death, marriage and divorce records are restricted to authorized individuals by the Department of Health and Senior Services, which maintains a state repository of vital records. However, marriage records can be viewed through the County Recorder of Deeds with fewer restrictions, as can divorce records from the Circuit Court. Other Missouri public records available are court records, both civil and criminal, online through Missouri Case.net, which offers online access to most court records. Missouri criminal records are also public record and may be requested by anyone online through the State Highway Patrol. Also available are historic Missouri public records from the State Archives, including military records, cemetery and vital records, and obituaries. These are available for public search, and some are included in online databases.

  • Missouri marriage records can also be viewed at the County Recorder of Deeds where the marriage occurred.

  • About Missouri Public Records

Missouri does restrict access to certified copies of vital records contained in the state repository through the Department of Health and Senior Services. However, authorized recipients may request these Missouri public records, which include the person of record, a family member or a legal representative. Sometimes, permission is granted for those with a genealogy purpose.

However, Missouri marriage records can be requested from the County Recorder of Deeds.  Some counties have online access, and these don’t always have the same restrictions as the Department of Health and Senior Services, meaning informational copies might be available depending on the county.

Also, Missouri public records like divorce records can be requested from the Circuit Court that heard the case. They are also available online, for most counties, through the Missouri Case.net online court records search tool. Restrictions exist on certified copies because these Missouri public records can be used to establish identity, and officials want to prevent identity theft.
