Alaska Public Records

Alaska Public RecordsAlthough Alaska didn’t officially become a state until 1959, it was purchased by the U.S. in 1867 from Russia and has quite an extensive history. Alaska offers a variety of record types available to the public, although some have restrictions. Vital records in Alaska, which include birth, death, marriage and divorce records, are restricted to authorized recipients. These Alaska public records can be requested from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, which is a division of the Department of Health and Social Services. Also available are Alaska court records, both civil and criminal, through the local courts or online through the Alaska Court System’s online access. The Department of Public Safety provides access to Alaska criminal records. Anyone may request criminal records, although only convictions and pending charges are available to the public. For access to historic Alaska public records, visit the State Library, which holds military records, vital records and obituaries.

  • Alaska birth records, death, marriage and divorce records may be requested by mail, fax or in person from the Bureau of Vital Statistics by authorized recipients.
  • The Alaska Court System offers online access to civil and criminal court records. For physical copies, contact the specific court that handled the case in person.
  • Alaska criminal records can be requested by anyone from the Department of Public Safety by mail.
  • The State Library holds a collection of historic records, including vital records, military records and obituaries. This collection is open to the public.
  • About Alaska Public Records

Although most records described are readily available to the public, there are exceptions. Alaska death records, marriage and divorce records are restricted to authorized recipients, meaning the person of record, a family member or legal representative. However, after 50 years, these Alaska public records are released to the public. Alaska birth records must wait 100 years before being released to the public and have the same restrictions in place. The Bureau of Vital Statistics has several locations to aid in convenient in-person requests, which can usually be satisfied while you wait.

Although these public records in Alaska are restricted, anyone conducting genealogy research will likely be accessing historic vital records, and these will most likely fall into the category of public records. Another resource for accessing Alaska vital records is the State Archives, as well as the State Library. These historic Alaska vital records are from all over the state, and many have searchable indexes to determine whether a particular person is included.

Obtaining Online Public Records in Alaska

Conducting a public records search in Alaska is limited to in-person or mailed requests. Also, due to privacy restrictions, an online searchable database isn’t always allowed. However, a major exception is access to Alaska court records. The Alaska Court System provides access to civil, criminal, traffic, small claims, domestic, divorce and probate case records. Searching Alaska court records online can be performed by inputting a name or case number, and the results will provide contact information for the specific court that holds the full record. It should be noted that these online public records in Alaska only date back to 1990. Prior court cases are physically stored at the court that handled the case.

Although an overview of case details are included in each case record search, these Alaska online public records aren’t complete. For a copy of the case file, you must visit the court listed on the online record or mail your request following the instructions listed online. Although Alaska divorce records are restricted, viewing divorce court records is not, making this a way to access these records without waiting for 50 years to pass.

Performing a Public Records Search in Alaska

Other public records available include access to Alaska criminal records through the Department of Safety. Only the person of record and law enforcement may view someone’s entire Alaska criminal history, but anyone is permitted to request conviction information. This service is satisfied by mail for a fee. An alternative is to perform an Alaska public records search for criminal court records, which can also paint an illustrative picture.  In addition, this type of Alaska public records search online is free through the Department of Safety.

A public records search in Alaska might also include exploring the collections held by the State Library. Many of these historic Alaska military records, vital records and obituaries can be searched online through the library’s catalogue search feature. These can be viewed in person.
